The Sunrise app is a convenient way to track your business expenses while you’re on the move. Especially handy is being able to snap a picture of a receipt and attach it as proof when creating an expense. Here’s how to use the mobile expense tracking feature on your app.
Tap Expenses on the bottom menu of your screen. This will take you to an overview screen of all your expenses including drafts, paid, unpaid, and overdue.
You can tap on any expense to see more details such as the Vendor, Category, Expense Date, an image of a receipt (if one was attached), a Description of the expense, and the option of marking it Paid.
Back on the overview screen, you can add a new expense by tapping + in the lower right corner. This will bring up a menu where you can Capture Receipt or Add Expense. Both options will start the process of creating a new expense, but the former will first launch your smartphone’s camera to make it easy to quickly take a picture of a receipt which will be automatically attached to the new expense.
Note: if you’re using “Capture Receipt” for the first time, your phone may ask your permission to give the Sunrise app access to your camera.
Once you snap a picture, the next screen will prompt you to add in details for this new expense. This is also the screen you would see if you started by tapping Add Expense instead of Capture Receipt.
On this screen, enter the amount of the expense. Next, you can choose from a list of Vendors you already have saved in your Sunrise account, or enter a new contact and tap Create New Vendor to save.
You can also choose the category of this expense from the saved categories in your account. Use the Search Categories field to quickly find the desired one.
The Expense Date will default to the current day, but you can change that by tapping the calendar icon and selecting a new date.
If you haven’t already added a photo of a receipt, you can do that at any time by tapping View/Edit Receipt. This will prompt you to choose a photo that you already have saved in your smartphone’s gallery, or launch your camera to take a new photo.
You can delete or change your photo at any time by tapping View/Edit, then tapping Edit on the top right hand corner. This will bring up a menu where you can choose a new photo from your gallery, take a photo, or simply remove the current photo altogether.
Next, you can add a Description to add more context to an expense.
Finally, you can Save as Draft or Approve the new expense. The latter will save the expense as Unpaid. Again, you can tap any expense to change the status to Paid.
Happy mobile expensing!
